Details of Upcoming MSMAM Workshops

Workshop Series on: "How to Successfully Design a Drainage System for Compliance with the New Urban Stormwater Management Manual by D.I.D.?"

It consists of the following four 2-Day Workshops:

Workshop No. 1- " New Approach to Urban Drainage Design for Compliance with the "Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia" by D.I.D."

Workshop No. 2- " How to Design a Drainage System Using Free Public Domain Software to Satisfy the Requirements of the New Stormwater Manual by D.I.D." (Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modelling using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS by U.S. Hydrologic Engineering Center)

Workshop No. 3- "How to Design Detention/Sediment Basins and Culverts for Compliance with the 'Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia' by D.I.D"

Workshop No. 4- "On-Site Detention (OSD) and Erosion & Sediment Control Plan (ESCP)"

What are the major differences between the four workshops?

Workshop No. 1: Covers the basic principles of drainage design adopted in MSMAM and important design criteria and procedures including:

1. Design for major and minor storms.
2. Design storm computation.
3. Rational Method of computing peak discharge.
4. Time-Area Method of routing hydrograph.
5. Reservoir Storage Routing for detention basin design.

Workshop No. 2: Covers the design drainage system using two free software recommended in MSMAM ie, hydrologic software HEC-HMS and hydraulic software HEC-RAS developed by the Hydrologic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Topics include:

1. Hydrologic model HEC-HMS computes the peak discharges and runoff hydrographs.
2. Hydraulic model HEC-RAS computes the corresponding backwater surface profile.
3. These two powerful but user-friendly software are indispensable tools for drainage engineers.
4. Compare to commercial software that cost thousands, the HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS can be downloaded for free.

Workshop No. 3: Covers the design of detention basin, dry and wet sediment basins and culverts. Topics covered include:

1. Design of detention or sediment basins using spreadsheet.
2. Wet and dry detention basin design.
3. Culvert design using nomographs and spreadsheet.

Workshop No. 4- "On-Site Detention (OSD) and Erosion & Sediment Control Plan (ESCP)" Topics covered include:

1. On-Site Detention (OSD)
2. Erosion & Sediment Control Plan (ESCP).

Pre-requisite:
The pre-requisite for Workshop No. 3 and 4 is Workshop No. 1. It is strongly recommended that you attend Workshop No. 1 before you attend Workshop No. 3 and 4 as the latter require knowledge on subject matters covered in the former. There is no pre-requisite for the other workshops.
