Details of Upcoming MSMA2 Workshops

Why must you attend the MSMA2 Workshop?

Case studies applying MSMA1 & 2 to Kuala Lumpur revealed the following startling changes:

1. Design storm in MSMA2 increased by up to 126% compared to MSMA1.
2. Design discharge using Rational Method in MSMA2 increased by up to 131% compared to MSMA1.
3. OSD storage volume in MSMA2 increased by up to 190% compared to MSMA1.
4. Storage volume for wet sediment basin in MSMA2 increased by up to 165% compared to MSMA1.


New MSMA2 Workshop"

It consists of the following four 2-Day Workshops:

Workshop A- " Introduction to MSMA2, Design Storm, Rational Method, Time-Area Method."

Workshop B- "Reservoir routing, detention basin, OSD, culvert design."

Workshop C- "Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modelling using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS by U.S. Hydrologic Engineering Center"

Workshop D- "Sediment basins and Erosion and Sediment Control Plan"


What are the major differences between the four workshops?

Workshop A: Covers the following:

1. Brief introduction to MSMA2.
2. Major changes in MSMA2 from the first edition.
3. Case studies comparing results of MSMA1 and 2.
4. Design storm computation in MSMA2.
5. Rational Method of computing peak discharge in MSMA2.
6. Time-Area Method in MSMA2.

Workshop B- "Reservoir Routing, detention basin, On-Site Detention (OSD) and Culvert Design." Topics covered include:

1. Reservoir routing using level pool routing method.
2. Detention basin design using spreadsheet.
3. OSD using the Approximate Swinburne's Method in MSMA2, compared to the Swinburne's Method in MSMA1.
4. Culvert design.

Workshop C: Covers the design drainage system using two free software recommended in MSMA ie, hydrologic software HEC-HMS and hydraulic software HEC-RAS developed by the Hydrologic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Topics include:

1. Hydrologic model HEC-HMS computes the peak discharges and runoff hydrographs.
2. Hydraulic model HEC-RAS computes the corresponding backwater surface profile.
3. These two powerful but user-friendly software are indispensable tools for drainage engineers.
4. Compare to commercial software that cost thousands, the HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS can be downloaded for free.

Workshop No. D: Covers the design of dry and wet sediment basins and Erosion & Sediment Control Plan (ESCP). Topics covered include:

1. Design of wet and dry sediments basins in MSMA2.
2. Comparison of results with the first edition.
3. Preparation of a Erosion & Sediment Control Plan (ESCP).


Pre-requisite:
The pre-requisite for Workshop B and D is Workshop A. It is strongly recommended that you attend Workshop A before you attend Workshop B and D as the latter require knowledge on subject matters covered in the former. There is no pre-requisite for the other workshops.
